December 3rd
One-fifth of your life
post by: Eric Morgan
I read a magazine article yesterday about how the average person consumes 34 hours of media each week. (Yes, I see the irony of reading a magazine article about media consumption, thank you.) 34 hours. That’s 20% of the week. 1/5 of our time. In comparison we spend 24% of the week at the office (if you’re one of those lucky people who only works 40 hours a week) and we sleep 29% of the week. Between media, work and sleep, we’re only left with 27% of our week to get on with the rest of our lives. Oh, and don’t forget to include eating into that 27%. After all, its sort of a necessary requirement to sustain life so we should squeeze it in somewhere.
Every time I see the number of hours we spend with media I’m amazed. I don’t know why, but to consider that our time with media, whether for entertainment, information gathering or whatever, accounts for a fifth of our time on this planet is intriguing. It is so important that we’ve made it the 3rd largest part of our week. And by the looks of things that number will only continue to grow with the advent of new media sources and countless streams of information. So sit down, relax and continue to consume. Oh, and don’t forget to make room for some food once in a while.
